The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Head Start has issued new statutory requirements related to the qualifications for center-based Head Start teaching staff. Please carefully read the position notices below before submitting your application.

Head Start Assistant Teacher – 42 weeks

Position Description: Position will assist the teacher and cooperate in a supportive role carrying out developmentally appropriate activities, promoting the health, nutrition and education of the children, and attending to their safety and welfare. Position will assist the teacher with providing a successful, safe and supervised educational setting for children (ages 3 to 5) while they are in the Head Start environment (classroom, outdoor play area, and field trips); promoting the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start children; encouraging parent involvement in all aspects of the program, including home visits; developing individual goals for children, providing on-going assessment on progress and facilitating transition into kindergarten.

Qualifications:

  1. A child development associate credential (CDA) along with high school diploma or GED; or
  2. Enrolled in a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree in early childhood education; or
  3. Enrolled in a child development associate credential program to be completed within 1 year. NOTE: Transcripts are required with the application. Additional information may be requested on the college credit courses taken and their relevance to early childhood education or child development with a focus on children ages 3 to 5.
  4. Physically and mentally able to care for children on a daily basis and in emergency situations.
  5. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual English/Spanish skills highly desirable.
  6. Basic computer skills, internet, and email.
  7. Must be of good moral character and must successfully complete pre-employment screening as dictated by agency policy, Mississippi childcare licensure regulations, and the Office of Head Start. This screening process includes: References, Drug Screening, Child Abuse Central Registry Check, National Criminal History Record Check (Fingerprinting), Sex Offender Registry Check, Immunization Certification (MSDH Form 121), Health Exam, and Motor Vehicle Records Check (for positions that may require work related driving.)

Wages: $7.50 – $8.40/hour

Head Start Center Floater – 42 weeks

Position Description: The Center Floater is assigned to a Head Start center to ensure program ratios are maintained. The Center Floater may work in a classroom, kitchen, office, or assigned to a different center as needed. They must be knowledgeable and capable of meeting Head Start objectives and Performance Standards as well as adaptable to these various environments, duties, and personalities.

Qualifications:

  1. A child development associate credential (CDA) along with high school diploma or GED; or
  2. Enrolled in a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree in early childhood education; or
