AGING SERVICES

T

he Aging Services program at JCCAC offers Jackson County seniors opportunities for continued independence. Congregate and home-delivered meals are available, as well as transportation services. JCCAC operates two senior centers: in Moss Point at 5343 Jefferson Ave. and Ocean Springs at 514 Washington Ave. Senior center staff can also provide information and referrals to services seniors may need.

Nutritionally balanced congregate meals are provided at each center Monday through Thursday. For home-delivery clients, five frozen meals are delivered once a week.

Myriad enrichment activities are available at the senior centers. Crafts, games and exercise are common activities and speakers often drop in to discuss topics such as health and nutrition, among many others.

Often, groups from the community come in to provide entertainment. To participate in activities at the senior centers, contact Moss Point Center Specialist Lydia Clay at 471-1243 or 471-1244 or Ocean Springs Center Specialist Laurie Porco at 872-3653.

The transportation program ensures that seniors can access the resources available and obtain needed services in order to maintain their independence.  The program allows seniors to maintain mobility and Transportationdelay premature institutionalization. 

Daily transportation is available Monday through Thursday. Individuals in need of transportation should contact the Transportation Coordinator 24-48 hours prior to the date of travel. Senior Participants must be able to board the bus independently.  A wheelchair lift is available for clients utilizing wheelchairs. Medical transportation is provided for seniors to area doctors. Reservations must be made 1 week in advance. Shopping Transportation is available to area supermarkets. Appointments should be scheduled between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Grocery bags will be limited to three. Contact Tammy Covan, Transportation Coordinator at 228-471-1244 or Laurie Porco 228-872-3653.

Jackson County Seniors Enjoy a Luau!

Seniors donned grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts for a fun-filled day at the Jackson County Civic Center On June 15.

Hosted by Jackson County Civic Action Committee Aging Services in honor of Senior Awareness Day, the event featured, food, informational booths hosted by local businesses and organizations, local celebrity waiters and door prizes. Local military servicemembers also attended.

Ocean Springs Seniors Donate Supplies to Flood Victims

Moss Point Senior Center hosts Field Day!

 

Volunteers from throughout the community came out to engage Moss Point seniors in fun activities and games at the Moss Point Senior Center's Field Day. Games, food, snow cones and prizes were among the many delights enjoyed.

Supervisor Melton Harris and Mayor Aniece Liddell were on hand for the festvities along with Moss Point Parks and Recreation, Mississippi State Extension Service, Moss Point Fire Department, Moss Point High School Cheerleaders, AmeriCorps, CSBG volunteers, Moss Point Building Inspection Department, Gulf Coast Hospice, Jackson County Senior Companions and Coast Medical Supply.

Lunch and prizes were donated by Chevron Refinery, City of Moss Point, Mississippi State Extension Service, JCAC, Jackson County Senior Companion Program and Coast Medical Supply.
